Women of Influence: feeling free to fail

Last night I attended my first Women of Influence event and I just wanted to give a big thank you to their team for putting together a fantastic evening. The event was titled “How Katie Telford became the Most Powerful Women in Canadian Politics.” Katie Telford is the Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister of Canada and is the 2nd women in Canadian history to hold her position. And to top it off she has accomplished this before the age of 40. Needless to say, I was extremely excited to hear her speak about how she set her goals and designed her career to achieve them.

The night was set in a Q&A format and here are a selection of quotes from Katie that really resonated with me and has gotten me thinking about my life and career.

  • “You learn so much more from failure or defeat and how you can push forward for success.”
  • “Experience can be defined in many ways and age is not the definition of experience. We are seeing this change happen in the work place.”
  • “You have to hear criticism to see if there is something you can learn. People don’t criticize for no reason. You have to listen.”
  • “Failing is not a bad thing, if you fail then fail fast so you can learn from it.”

The event was also a great opportunity to meet and speak with other like minded women. I had the pleasure of speaking to a few different women who shared with me their career path, what has inspired them and moments of self doubt.

I’m looking forward to more of the Women of Influence Evening Series and I highly recommend you check out their website for more information.
